The Rocky Horror Picture Show

 ROLE-PLAYING GAME

Yes- it's finally here - the worlds first Role-playing system set in the fabulous world of Denton U.S.A.!!!

This Game is officially sanctioned by the World Infamous Charming Underclothes, Britain's only weekly performing Live Rocky Horror cast, based in London, England - the home of Rocky Horror.

 The R.H.P.S RPG attempts to recreate the same qualities that we love from the Picture Show experience; namely sexy gals, loadsa laffs, campness and cross-dressing, all wrapped up in a B-flick genre, and put them into an interactive par-tic-i-pation game!

 What is a Role-playing game?

 A Role-playing game is an exercise in imagination and teamwork. Unlike many other types of game you might have played, role-playing games are dependant  not upon beating an opponent, but rather upon the enjoyment of all involved. There are no losers in a role-playing game (not in this one anyway...). Within a role-playing game, you create an alternate character, another ego if you will, through which you and your fellow players can explore the environment of your choice - in this instance, the world created in the cult movie 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'. The aim of the game is simple; create your character, meet up with other characters, and interact with those characters. You can form your own plots and schemes, find friends, make enemies, or explore the world that you inhabit. You can do pretty much do anything you so choose to do.

 The basic premise of this game is as follows - You have the opportunity to take on the persona of a resident of the "Home of Happiness", Denton U.S.A., some two years after the events which have unfolded in the "Denton Affair". You can play either a hapless do-gooder, like Brad Majors, A Scientist, like Dr. Scott, or even an undercover Transylvanian, seeking to emulate the works of Dr Frank N. Furter. The choice is yours! Once your character is created you can explore the world of Denton, interacting with the other players - what you choose to do is up to you, whoever you talk to is up to you! The aim of the game is to interact as much as you like with the other characters and explore the world of Brad, Janet and Timewarping, transsexual, transvestite Transylvanians, so enjoy!

So how do you get started? That's easy! The first thing to do is to pick what type of character you would like to play - do you see yourself as a Brad or as a Riff-Raff? A Janet or a Columbia? Pick which type of character you would like from the list below...

Character Types

  • A SCIENTIST / A RIVAL SCIENTIST
  • A HERO / A HEROINE
  • A DELIVERY BOY / GIRL
  • A CREATION
  • A HANDYMAN / DOMESTIC
  • A GROUPIE

 Done that? Great! Jot it down on a piece of paper, alternatively you can fill out the information on our Character Sheet . Now the next thing to decide is where you come from. This defines your background and history, take a look see;

Character Home-Planet

 This now gives you the bare bones of your character. For example, Gavin finds out about the game, and is interested in playing. He has just watched the film (for the millionth and first time) and wants to play someone just like Eddie, so he jots down DELIVERY BOY (Eddie's "Profession" in the film), and then jots down EARTHLING. This gives him pretty much all of the information he needs to know at this point to begin building his character (Just how much easier could this possibly be?). Gavin's next step is to begin building an idea in his head of what his character is like. He decides that his DELIVERY BOY's name will be Marlowe (he'll think of a last name later...) and that just like Eddie he's a big side-burned, long haired greaser. Unlike Eddie, however, Marlowe has a lot less in the belly department, and instead of driving a motorbike, he does his deliveries in a flat-bed pick-up truck. Gavin gives a quick description of what his character looks like, and also decides that Marlowe is a roadie for a local Rock and Roll band (Oscar, Drill and the Bits....), and that he has a passion for drive through horror movies, and hey-presto Gavin now has one his character of Marlowe ready to play in his first game!

So how do we play the game?

 The game is controlled - refereed if you will - by a narrator who we will know as THE CRIMINOLOGIST. The CRIMINOLOGIST sets each scene to the players, and explains the mundane and bizarre happening of Denton. To achieve anything in the "Home of Happiness" ALL actions must go through the CRIM, who will officiate and monitor all of the events at each gaming session. The CRIM is there to ensure that all players have fun, that everyone has a good time, and that no players are pushed to the sidelines of a game. Here is an example of a game in progress - The CRIMINOLOGIST is narrating, Gavin is playing MARLOWE, and David is playing JANICE;

The Home of Happiness

CRIMINOLOGIST

MARLOWE

JANICE

CRIMINOLOGIST ; ALL WAS APPARENTLY WELL AS OUR TWO HEROES DROVE OUT OF TOWN TO MEET THERE FRIEND , THE RENOWNED SCIENTIST DR EVERETT SCOTT, BUT ONLY MINUTES AFTER PASSING A STRANGE AND LONELY LOOKING CASTLE OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, THE YOUNG DELIVERY BOY MARLOWE WAS SHOCKED TO DISCOVER THAT ONE OF THE NEWLY REPLACED TYRES ON HIS FLAT-BED TRUCK HAD MYSTERIOUSLY FLATTENED....

MARLOWE ; What do you mean we've had a blow-out? Dammit I knew I should have gotten that spare tyre fixed!

JANICE      ; Oh gosh Marlowe, what shall we do now!

MARLOWE ; Didn't we pass a castle back down the road a few miles?

 MARLOWE (I POINT TOWARDS THE CASTLE) Look Janice, there's a light!

 Just like the movie! As you can see, the CRIMINOLOGIST has set a rather familiar scene and our two players, David and Gavin, have set about exploring the scene. However, one of the elements that has made The Rocky Horror Picture Show, so individual and appealing to it's audiences, is the audiences ability to commentate on the film through the use of audience par-tic-i-pation! We shall run the scene back now, with each player adding their own par-tic-i-pation;

The Home of Happiness

 See how easy it is? As you can see, The CRIMINOLOGIST is responsible for painting Denton and it's environs, and for helping the players to enjoy the game.

The Home of Happiness

 The game itself is played out in our own little microcosm of Denton, THE HOME OF HAPPINESS. Once you have your character, just dive in, and see what's happening! There are several guidelines, or Rules of Etiquette, that you should observe, to fully enjoy, and to ensure others enjoy, the Denton experience;

  • The CRIMINOLOGIST is ALWAYS right - The CRIMINOLOGIST knows EVERYTHING - without this simple assumption the game devolves into anarchy. If you disagree with the CRIM', or if you dispute one of the CRIM's decisions then drop him an E-mail, or talk to him in the chat-room after the game. If you try to argue a point during the game, then the game has to stop, while you try to sort the disagreement out, then everybody gets bored. Maintain your willing suspension of disbelief!! The CRIMINOLOGIST will always be prepared to talk and explain any of his decisions, he is actually quite nice...

  • When you Log into the chat room, use your Character name! If you use your own name, or a handle it can be VERY confusing....Feel free to choose a colour for your character though, the instructions for doing so are underneath the messaging box. You can also find here a facility to add a picture or 'Avatar' of yourself that will be shown next to your name.

  • When talking in character just write normally!! It will show on the screen just like a play-script, with the characters dialogue being printed next to the characters name.

  • When describing what your character is doing, type in capitals, and put the description in brackets, for example; (I BURST OUT OF THE FREEZER ON MY MOTORCYCLE).

  • For giving call back lines, before typing the line, type /a . This will give all callback lines a unified feel. For example Gavin wants to call Brad an "Arsehole!", so he  types-  /a Arsehole!  - which is then printed on the screen. Easy!

  • If you want to check anything with the CRIMINOLOGIST without telling any of the other characters, then you can whisper to him by typing /w . For example David's character "Janice" wants to creep into Marisa's character "Dorothy's" room disguised as Gavin's character "Marlowe", obviously not wanting Marisa or Gavin to know, so he types /w The CRIMINOLOGIST  (CAN I CREEP INTO DOROTHY'S ROOM DISGUISED AS MARLOWE?). The CRIM' can also whisper back to you, and if you so desire, you can whisper to and from each other, however, it can be awfully dull if the game devolves into continuous whispering. One of the most important  themes behind the game is that it gives us the opportunity to share Denton, and our mutual love of  Rocky Horror, not to isolate ourselves from  one another.

 So you've read the rules (all the ones that you need to worry about now anyway!), why not give the game a try?  Return to Main Menu....If you Dare!
